Not all that long ago, Hive was seen as little more than a user-friendly wallet program for the Mac OS. Like many things Apple, it was largely unknown beyond a core user base, and rarely mentioned in the list of popular bitcoin wallet clients. That changed in May, however, when Hive opted to switch platforms completely and launch their first Android OS wallet app. As one of the first wallet clients to integrate BIP-70 updates, the Hive wallet quickly caught the attention of users.
Today, Hive took their wallet system a step further, launching a new HTML5 web wallet. The system brings Hive’s well-established design sensibility to a cross-platform audience, and has likely been in development before Apple’s unexpected about-face allowing mobile wallet apps in the iTunes store. Hive’s promotional images show the wallet in use on an iPhone.
Hive Web is built around a hierarchical deterministic (HD) passphrase, with BIP-32 and BIP-39 specifications in mind for greater security. With many popular locally hosted wallets still lagging behind in HD, BIP-32 and BIP-39 compliance, Hive Web seems well ahead of the curve.
In addition to bitcoin, Hive Web is also capable of hosting litecoin wallets. With LTC still struggling for even a fraction of bitcoin’s userbase and merchant adoption, Hive Web is one of the first mainstream apps to even attempt such integration. The company also hinted that support for dogecoin was also in the works.
